Advanced Acupuncture in Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum Care

**Registration is now closed for 2022

“I want to thank Debra, Claudia, Kate, Zena, and Sara for their incredible knowledge and guidance through the MAMPS program, which has laid so much of the groundwork for resources like this to be created in the first place. (she is referring to her chart and protocol sheet she made)

I made this because I’m on a good run and have had a 100% success rate with turning babies within 72 hours of treatment since incorporating cupping into my breech treatment (which I learned via MAMPS) along with root treatment and moxa.  Maybe its just a coincidence, but I feel like the addition of cupping the low back has really made a difference.” ~ Sarah (2021 student)

MAMPS (Maternity Acupuncture Mentoring and Peer Support) Mentorship Information

MAMPS is a collaboration of four acupuncturists highly experienced in supporting pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care. Recognizing that these topics have been downplayed or even discouraged in some acupuncture schools, our goal is to help acupuncturists become safe, effective, confident providers of pregnancy, birthing, and postpartum care.  We also aim to nurture excellence in the next generation of teachers and treatment providers while providing a safe and inspiring space for group study.

We are delighted to be offering our fourth year of this mentorship to support acupuncturists of all levels of experience. Come and join us to develop your confidence for clinical practice or connect and share with other experienced practitioners and troubleshoot your difficult cases.

The focus for this year’s mentorship is clinical cases – with a monthly discussion on specific case histories.  There will also be a research journal club and a writers group meeting each month for those interested in developing their skills in these areas.

The mentorship runs for ten months commencing April 4th, 2022. Each month gives your three opportunities to connect with us for an hour live session via Zoom, with each session recorded for those who cannot attend.

Each month for 10 months we will offer

WEEK ONE: Case scenarios and/or cases from clinical practice are posted in your classroom, along with specific resources such as lectures and articles we think you may find useful.  A research journal article will also be posted for those of you interested in joining the journal club discussion.

WEEK TWO:  The writer’s group – facilitated by Claudia Citkovitz, meets to discuss a step-by-step process for writing a case history for publication.  It may be that there is interest from participants in writing up other types of documents which we will try and accommodate

WEEK THREE:  Journal Club facilitated by Kate Levett, meets to discuss a research article(s) of relevance to practice with a focus on how this information relates to clinical practice or how you can use this to discuss acupuncture treatment with health professionals

WEEK FOUR: Case history discussion – facilitated by Debra Betts and Zena Kocher. An opportunity to discuss the case scenarios and/or cases from clinical practice posted at the beginning of the month. This will initially use break-out rooms to encourage group sharing of possible treatment approaches, followed by feedback to the main group with treatment suggestions from the MAMPS facilitators and guest mentors.

Also included in this MAMPS mentorship access to:
Resource Library – including lectures and resources from previous MAMPS courses
A question-and-answer forum – a place to connect with us and ask questions about clinical practice

Dr. Citkovitz studied Chinese language in Beijing and acupuncture at the Pacific and Tri-State colleges in New York. An internationally known lecturer on acupuncture practice and research methodology, she lectures regularly for the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, the University of Westminster in London and the British Acupuncture Council. Zena Kocher
Zena Kocher Author

Since 1995, Zena Kocher has been a practicing traditional Asian medicine provider with clinical experience in women’s health. In 2006, she expanded her practice to also serve as an Integrative Medicine (IM) provider for MotherBaby Center at Abbott Northwestern hospital, which is a part of the Allina Healthcare system in Minnesota. As an IM inpatient provider, she uses acupuncture, massage, mind body techniques and aromatherapy to support women during their pregnancies, births and postpartum periods in the hospital. She has had the unique experience of working with high risk pregnancies in the antenatal unit, helping women to stay pregnant and happy longer. In the last few years, Zena has been enjoying training other acupuncturists to work in the MotherBaby Centers at other Allina Health hospitals and has created a MotherBaby collaborative to strengthen and inform our Integrative work. Zena’s introduction to natural medicine came at the heels of her Swiss grandmother, who would forage herbs and use them to treat her family. In 1995, she expanded upon this knowledge by studying directly under Dr. Duc Kieu, a Vietnamese Herbalist and Master Acupuncturist for three years. Then she went to receive her Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine from the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences University and became NCCAOM certified in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. She utilizes various bodywork modalities, Shiatsu, Reiki, guided imagery, NLP, and hypnosis in her work. She enjoys teaching individuals, families, and groups of caring people and hopes to share this work internationally.
