Full MAMPS Mentorship Program

The MAMPS program is presented in a modular format, to support solid mastery of one topic before moving on to the next. 

Course Format

This program is a rigorous 9-month program of study that combines pre-recorded lectures, reading assignments, and live group study meetings with MAMPS mentors.  Students interested in focusing on perinatal care and receiving a certificate of completion as a MAMPS graduate should choose this option.

  • Five modules of pre-recorded video lectures spanning nine months of learning.  Modules include Foundations of Perinatal Care, Pregnancy, Labor Preparation, Labor and Birth, and Postpartum
  • Live one-hour monthly discussion with Debra Betts, Caudia Citkovitz, Zena Kocher, Kate Levett and/or Sarah Tewhey to discuss the current module and troubleshoot challenging cases submitted to the forum by current students and alumni. A recording is made available to those who cannot attend in person
  • Live one-hour monthly Special Topics in Evidence Based Practice meeting with Kate Levett, Debra Betts, Zena Kocher or Claudia Citkovitz to discuss practical treatment methods for a variety of clinical concerns.  A recording is made available to those who cannot attend in person
  • Monthly reading assignments to accompany lectures
  • Online discussion forum with MAMPS mentors, alumni, and current students to post questions and cases
  • One individual writing mentoring session with Claudia Citkovitz for those students who submit a draft they are working on for publication, education or community outreach
  • Full access to the MAMPS Library and Archives, which includes written resources and prior MAMPS recorded lectures

Debra Betts

Debra graduated from the London College of Acupuncture in 1989 and specializes in women’s health. In 1997, she started teaching acupuncture to midwives and has published several works on the use of acupuncture and acupressure in obstetric practice, including the book “The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth.” She completed her PhD on the use of acupuncture in threatened miscarriage in 2014 and is now the Director of Postgraduate Programs for an online Masters’s course in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Debra also works as a clinical supervisor at a hospital antenatal acupuncture clinic and lectures internationally on the use of acupuncture in obstetric care.

Kate Levett

Dr. Kate Levett is a highly qualified specialist in acupuncture, education, and research, with over 20 years of experience in these fields. She holds a B.Ed in Health and Medical Education from the University of Sydney, a Masters in Public Health with a focus on epidemiology, and an Advanced Diploma in Applied Science in Acupuncture. She received her PhD from the NICM Research Institute at Western Sydney University for her research on the development, delivery, and evaluation of an antenatal education program for managing labor pain through non-pharmacological methods such as acupressure.

Zena Kocher

Zena Kocher is a practitioner of traditional Asian medicine with over 25 years of experience, especially in women’s health. She provides Integrative Medicine services at the MotherBaby Center of Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minnesota using acupuncture, massage, mind-body techniques, and aromatherapy to support women during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She has experience in high-risk pregnancies and trains other acupuncturists in the Allina Health system. Zena has a Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and uses Shiatsu, Reiki, guided imagery, NLP, and hypnosis in her work. She enjoys teaching individuals and groups.

Claudia Citkovitz, PhD, MS, LAc

Dr. Claudia Citkovitz is a specialist in acupuncture and has trained 270 acupuncture students and practitioners in inpatient care at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn. She conducted the first study in the US on acupuncture during birth in 2009 and another study on acupuncture for stroke rehabilitation in 2015, which she used as the basis for her PhD. She has published a book on acupressure and acupuncture during birth and is an active practitioner, educator, and peer reviewer in the field. Claudia serves on the board of various organizations related to acupuncture and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine.

Sarah Budd

Sarah Budd is a highly qualified and experienced midwife and acupuncturist with 35 years of practice. She has published chapters in two books and has attended high hundreds of births. Sarah has seen thousands of OB patients overall in her 47 years of working in a hospital. In 1988, she set up an acupuncture service in Plymouth Maternity Unit and went on to study Complementary Health Studies at Exeter University, where she won a Churchill Fellowship and studied acupuncture anesthesia in China. She was the first and only full-time acupuncturist midwife in the UK and has treated over 6,000 pregnant women with acupuncture on the NHS. She has co-authored a report for the Department of Health, worked as a research assistant, and contributed to text books and journals. In addition, Sarah has trained 20 students and continues to teach in acupuncture colleges and universities. Currently, she works one day a week in Plymouth and sees patients privately at home.

Sarah Tewhey

Sarah is a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist and doula with a focus on reproductive wellness. She has been in private practice since 2009 on Mt. Desert Island, Maine, specializing in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Before starting her practice, she was the Program Coordinator of Acupuncturists Without Borders in post-Katrina New Orleans, where she developed a commitment to providing quality healthcare to rural and underserved areas. She now works closely with midwives and a critical access hospital to provide collaborative maternal care in her community. Sarah lives on the island with her family and enjoys restoring their 1885 farmhouse.

  • Acupuncture support in complex conditions of pregnancy.

  • Common and complex concerns of late pregnancy.
  • Labor preparation and pre-birth treatments using acupuncture.
  • Treatment for malposition in pregnancy: breech, transverse and oblique lie.
  • Post-date pregnancy and treatment alongside medical induction.

  • The 3 stages of labor in physiologic birth, mechanisms of labor, and labor monitoring.
  • Understanding labor patterns through an East Asian Medicine perspective: the yin and yang of birth.
  • The basics of acupuncture and bodywork during labor.
  • Complications in labor and birth.
  • Early postpartum complications: hemorrhage, retained placenta, and infection.

  • Normal postpartum: what to expect in the first 6 weeks. 
  • Late postpartum complications and Red Flags for referral.
  • Understanding lactation and infant feeding
  • The acupuncturist’s role in cesearean recovery 
  • The pelvic floor: treatment of postpartum pelvic pain, prolapse, and incontinence.
  • Perinatal mood disorders and acupuncture support.
  • Bodywork for common concerns in the newborn
  • Providing treatment after pregnancy loss

This is a Mentorship Program with a cohort with a beginning and end date, like a college semester, for which you commit to completion. Your Healthy Seminar team and Mentors work with you from the beginning of the process, and you have access to all the tools required for successful completion.

  • Acquire basic research literacy skills and understand the current research on acupuncture within this area of study.

The focus of the mentorship is deep experiential learning, and peer connection. Although maximizing the quantity of CEU/PDAs will not be a focus, we have made available a maximum of 30 CEU/PDAs you can earn during the nine-month program.

As this is a Mentorship Program with a cohort that has a beginning and end date, like a college semester, for which you commit to completion. Your Healthy Seminar team and Mentors work with you personally from the beginning of the process, and you have access to all the tools required for successful completion. For this reason, FULL refunds are NOT  possible after you begin.

If you cancel before April 1, 2024, you can receive a full refund less our non-refundable eCommerce/admin fee of 5%.

Starting April 1st, If the mentorship is not a good fit for you, you can cancel by April 10th, 2024 and receive a refund calculated as what you have paid, minus a $350 withdrawal fee and minus $105 for the 4 CEU module 1. 

No refund as of April 11th, 2024.

You cannot transfer or sell your registration to this mentorship.

You will have continued access to recordings and handouts and forums until Dec 31, 2024.
