I apologize for my silence this year. I hope to get back to being more active in this group soon. Sarah reached out to me in regards to accessing the lecture Morgane Richardson provided for the OBAA.I believe this cohort has now been over 1 year into MAMPS and is now eligible for a free year of OBAA membership, which would allow everyone to watch the mentioned lecture for free (it’s in the members only section and is really AMAZING).
To apply for your membership all you need to do is fill out the form on our site: https://ob-acupuncture.com/membership-2/
And write MAMPS in the section referencing affiliate organizations. You can use your certificates from this program towards your CEUs 🙂
Warmest,

Hi Kari,
I use TdP lamps occasionally on feet in pregnancy, but not on the back or abdomen. Most pregnant women are hot, so I don’t use it often. If they have back pain or are very cold (like the yang def patients in the first trimester with slow embryo growth), I am more partial to having them moxa Du 4 for the cold patients, and cupping for the more robust patients.
I’d be interested in reading the data on fetal toxicity though. Where was the lamp placed, for how long, how did they identify it was the TdP lamp. Interesting food for thought.

Lol sometimes I feel so conservative in my approach with herbs in pregnancy.
I tend to focus on pain management and working on slowing growth through balancing whatever pattern is most prominent. I personally don’t focus on ‘shrinking’ the fibroid with herbs because once it is that size, I wouldn’t want to disturb the pregnancy. A lot of fibroid formulas include breaking up blood stasis (which are obviously a big no) or strong phlegm clearing, especially when you can physically palpate the mass. I like the idea of gently supporting the patient’s root pattern (which can be anything from dry, yin deficient, to yang deficient with water retention and phlegm accumulation), but if anything went sideways with the pregnancy and the patient told her doctor that she was taking herbs to shrink her fibroid, I would be super concerned blame would be transferred to you. (but again…I’m super conservative with herbs in pregnancy)Lori, it’s great to hear you are having such success alleviating pain with the balance method. I am using SA’AM or TCM acupuncture, but not balance method (although I did take some classes a long time ago). I think your balance method for fibroid pain would make a super interesting OBAA Roundtable since many people have taken balance method training. Let me know if you are ever interested in doing one with us!

Hi Diana,
In my experience it depends on the case. If the pregnant person is a multip where there is more wiggle room for baby to pop back up, or if she has a lot of amniotic fluid, I will have them continue just once a day for another round. Basically, if there is concern that baby may not stay head down, another round to help keep head down (just once/day) is sometimes helpful.

Hi everyone,
I double checked with the Midwives at work and they are advising all pregnant women, regardless of trimester to get the COVID vaccine (BC, Canada), based off of CDC guidelines and their governing body. For anxious clients or those with history of miscarriage, they are telling them to wait until the second trimester, but it’s more of a personal informed choice than a suggestion out of safety.

HI Kari,
I’m late to the game posting on here, but like everyone else, I have done acupressure via webinar platforms (HS) and on zoom. I did an international one (which was nice because it meant I didn’t have to fly to Sudan 😉 and I’ll be doing another larger one via zoom for the Doula Association, but I agree that it’s not as nice as showing groups in person and I feel like people don’t leave quite as confident as if they are shown in a hands on format. But overall it’s been positive.
Letting people know to watch with a partner/friend/family member (usually preg clients will tune in with a partner or friend, but it’s a good reminder if you’re also teaching doulas for them to tune in on line with someone in their home if possible). This allows them time to practice immediately and the opportunity for real time feedback. If you are doing regular classes with your clients, you can have each person have a moment to show you their location and give feedback (maybe under 10 people?). Keep us posted on how it goes!!One day we will all get back to the in-person classes (as well as dinners and dates with friends) and won’t that be glorious!!!
