I am curious about this as well. I’m sure some have treated here or we can mention it at the next session. I will make a note of it. Thank you for asking.

    Hi Cally,

Thank you for sharing this. I read some of the study and would like to delve into it a bit more. I’m a birth doula and acupuncturist so I incorporate moxa into the closing of the hips and often refer to a pelvic floor PT. I use smokey moxa on that whole low back/sacral/buttock and abdominal regions but I definitely like the idea of focused moxa on UB 54.

    Great topic.

From the limited experience I have, I think we have to consider gestational age. In the earlier weeks women can & do miscarry naturally for which I would give just what you mention shen calming points. I wonder now if nurturing the blood after or during the miscarriage, ie, is it helpful to sustain the woman while in the process or do we wait until after. I’m not sure. But probably a postpartum herbal broth would help. I have seen this discussion in other forums and the general consensus was you would need more than this formula. Curious to see others ideas.

    What a thought provoking scenario!

I have to admit this scenario plays out in my head more & more. If anyone plans to support birthing people at their home it is a possibility. I have historically specified I will start support once the MW arrives and or they arrive at hospital/center. However, lately it’s becoming more challenging with hospital birthing families because I’m trying to prepare them to labor at home longer in an effort to avoid hospital interventions. I want them to feel I can be there for them so its tricky.

Just this month I supported a family at home and they ended up at hospital within a couple of hours from when I left. Granted they’re minutes from the hospital but what if I had stayed longer… what if this was that precipitous birther… This has led me to consider birth assistant training. Even if it NEVER happens the education is worth it. I already know from your experience Sarah, that knowledge can help in our role supporting moms. Actually that case eventually resulted in a shoulder dystocia situation (in hospital). The baby required extra rubs to get her breathing & going. It was frightening for mom so I locked eyes with her & reassured her baby was fine & what was being done & why. I saw her eyes go from alarmed to processing in an instant and shortly afterwards baby cried- HUGE relief.

Somewhat related there’s a blog a doula colleague wrote during hurricane season on what to do in the event of home or car birth. It lists what to consider to have on hand in the case of an unexpected birth at home:

I also came across this article on (USA) Baby Center: https://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy/your-body/emergency-home-birth_169

    Babies are unpredictable!

Thank you for the recap Sarah. Very reassuring. The take-away for me in this last MAMPS cohort is “cervical softening” and that the more of that work we do beforehand the less will have to be done on day of. This is especially valuable for my clients-patients who are mainly birthing in a hospital setting and we’re often trying to minimize our time there.

The bishop score improvement with cochrane is just additional support- cervical softening is where it’s at.

I did vacillate on that one case #7 with waters breaking in bathroom. That makes sense, think- RED FLAGS. I think I chose correct answer. However I feel my thought was I may have not provided a tx but this hasn’t presented itself so good to have this case.

I did have one patient leave with strong cx’s that resulted in ROM on way home and that was intense! I had a feeling it would happen and provided a chuck pad. It was 11th hour case MW sent. I offered to have my husband drive her (home office at time) but she was confident she could make it home, over a bridge no less. Later, I realized I should have followed up immediately with the MW. The doula was at the house and caught the baby! It was a learning lesson for sure. Immediate follow up!!!

Look forward to what others have experienced in their practice.

    Hi Jetta,

I’m just catching up on the lectures and forum discussions. I love where you’re going with pp care-it’s so important & overlooked. I use these one- time use moxa heat packs (amazon). I give them one for early labor at home (low back pain). If I’m attending birth I bring one or two, one for them & 1 for me because hospitals are so cold! I keep a box in the office & home. Everyone gets a moxa pack for pp. I learned about these in another seminar, can’t recall which but they are pretty useful. They stay warm just about 24 hours although they advertise 12 hours. They come in a box of 10 along with a wrap but I don’t like that the wrap is synthetic so i just have them wrap in a thin cloth (shawl-rebozo) or a small hand towel. Everyone loves the warmth and they’re also good for menstrual cramps, & achy backs for long car rides 🙂 Here’s the link:

    Hi Lori,

Thank you for sharing this. I have someone coming in this week for CTS and referred by MW so glad I came across this. Perhaps I manifested that CTS case Danielle mentioned 🙂

It’s likely nothing beats direct moxa but I think some level of the herbal medicine & heat is active in the many forms. For postpartum the packs have been more for ease of use, ie compliant patient. So in that sense yes, i think it has been beneficial.

I tried ordering and of course out of stock everywhere. If anyone finds therapiks pls share! 🙂 I suspect it’s a summertime hot item.

Another thought was a LLL on the point. I haven’t used in hospital though. Home births are so much more open to tools.

    Hi Jetta,

oh my goodness how curious. Well as of now i believe baby is head down, I need to confirm that when I go back but I seem to recall patient saying that was case. For now at least breech isn’t an issue. She mentioned he is very active, almost restless fetus but again we met under such pressing conditions I haven’t done in depth Hx.

I will post tongue and pulse as well.

She does have Hx of M/C so I like your ideas of Du20, and beautiful baby (KD9) along with st36. She is fairly young and easy going. These cases really make me wish we all had preconception acu-care.

I would love to hear your case and yes please let’s speak offline as well. Texts work well for me, we can also set up a time to chat if you prefer.

Yes they’re nice. I heard about the moxa packs at an online seminar on moxa and we also had them in school clinic. I also had a crafty patient make me some. Not fancy but practical. A wooly glove +rice +mugwort sew up the glove opening= “A warming hand” I just used the last one. The mugwort I got from Kamwo & she assembled & sewed for me. She has since moved so I may make them myself sometime. All the free time!

Zena, I was just telling my husband about your electric moxa for hospital use! I was dreaming up ways to use it on a recent case.

I’m definitely ordering the thermapik for office use. How interesting that it penetrates as deep as the venom.

Yes, scheduling is key. Do we know if they can be “drop in” or are we committed to all the classes?
